Dr. James Freidenstein completed his undergraduate training at Colorado College and Appalachian State University prior to obtaining his medical degree from the University of Tennessee where he graduated with highest honors. He went on to complete his residency in anesthesiology at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. A heavy emphasis on acute post-surgical pain, regional anesthesia and nerve blocks prompted him to develop a keen interest in pain management. He later completed an interventional pain management fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he studied under the leading researcher in the field of arachnoiditis. While in fellowship, he was also involved with research involving perineural cysts and their treatment. Afterwards, he remained on staff at the UAB anesthesia department and helped to manage acute inpatient pain.

Dr. Freidenstein is board certified in both anesthesia and pain medicine, and he's involved with both national and local interventional pain societies. He has a special interest in post-surgical spinal pain and alternative modalities for fibromyalgia mediated pain.
